Meet me in Athens the day before we depart for our land tour. We'll enjoy a night and day in Athens where we visit both the Acropolis and temple of Athena, explore the bustling Syntagma Square and the fabulous streets of Monastiraki. Visit the Arch of Hadrian, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier—don't forget to check out the 2400 year old skeleton behind glass, unearthed before the 2004 Olympics when the Syntagma metro station was built! Then let's head off on our journey as we travel across the land of the gods visiting more of Greece's most historic landmarks. Enjoy your travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned coach with 4 star accommodation, meals and experiences steeped in centuries of rich culture!
Continue to Thermopylae, famous as the mountain pass where King Leonidas led his Spartan army, along with fellow Greek soldiers, into battle against the Persians in 480 B.C.
Let the towering rock formations of Meteora, near the town of Kalambaka, beckon. Here you will ascend one of these striking pinnacles—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—atop which you will visit one of the few remaining 1,000 year old monasteries.
Travel south, stopping at the foothills of Mount Parnassus. Ascend the Sacred Way of Delphi with your Local Expert. Pass the Parian marble Treasury of the Athenians and Polygonal Wall with its interlocking stones, still perfectly intact after thousands of years.
On to Olympia where you will indulge in an authentic cooking demonstration A local chef prepares a feast using locally crafted ingredients. Replete with lashings of olive oil and rich Greek cheeses, you’ll master moussaka and tzatziki before experiencing Greece in all its glory.
After falling in love with sumptuous Greek foods, Explore where the Olympic Games were first held in 776 B.C at the Temple of Zeus; somewhere in here we will visit a fully operational olive grove where we will take in the tastes and smells of the heart of the Peloponnese region and learn how this precious oil gets to your table! In the city of Mycenae, take in the giant Cyclopean stones before discovering traditional Greek pottery methods at the Mycenae Pottery Studio. Visit the wonderful seaside town of Nafplio, then visit a local winery in Nemea before heading back to Athens for another night stay.
On the second to last morning we head off to Cape Sounion where we visit the southernmost tip of Attica. This ancient fortress and sanctuaries were of strategic importance to the Athenians. Inside the fortress, the Temple of Poseidon sits at the summit beckoning. Let's return to the city along the Sunny Athens Riviera, where we stop for a relaxing afternoon at a local Beach club to rest the day away, with a swim in the Aegean, some snacks, a cocktail and maybe we can make it until sunset! The next morning after breakfast you will be transferred to the Port of Piraeus to your Greek Islands Cruise!
